So far, so great!

Review Date: February 8, 2010
Reviewer: Desmond,
[Update: if you update the firmware of the PVR, be sure to run the load default option afterward and select USA (if you're in the US) as the region--otherwise, you may not pick up any channels when you run auto scan.]

I've been using this PVR for a couple of days. I installed a 500 GB Western Digital hard drive, which the unit quickly formatted and now reads and writes to flawlessly. There is no discernible difference in the picture quality of live HD and recorded HD programs. The time-shifting feature is amazing and works just as well as the service-provided satellite and cable boxes I've seen and used.

One feature I love, which I hadn't read about, is the program guide. Like TiVo and other DVRs, you can see a list of programs by date and time, select the program you want to watch or record, and the unit will turn itself on, record, then turn itself off again. I only have over-the-air channels, which provide program info and short descriptions for most channels. I'm not sure how this feature would work with other HD services, but I'm very pleased that I'm able to do, with this PVR and no service, what my friends do with TiVos, DVRs, and expensive HD services. Of course, I get fewer channels (about 12, sometimes 15), but that's all I need.

One thing I don't like about the program guide interface is that, when you change the channel on the guide, the video feed changes channels with it. As far as I can tell, you can't look at lineups on other channels without actually changing the channel. Perhaps they'll address this in a future firmware update.

Another minor problem is that, if you switch back and forth between the TViX and regular antenna feed--for instance, I have splitter so that one cable goes to the TVix and another goes to back of the TV, so I can be recording one program on the PVR and watching another on through the TV's antenna input--the volume can be quite a bit louder on the TV.

The picture quality is fantastic! I only have a 32" 720 HDTV, but I assume it would look good in 1080, too. I set mine up to record in 1080 just for the heck of it. (a 30 minute show is a little under 3 GB, so you'll need a pretty big hard drive). If you don't have an HDMI cable when you initially set it up, like I didn't, and choose to use the included a/v cable, don't forget to select "load default" so that you can recalibrate the settings for HD playback.

This thing also plays music, displays photos, and plays a wide range of video formats, all of which you can transfer from your PC using a usb cable. The manual says you can plug usb devices like cameras straight into it, but I haven't tried this. You can also use the TViX as an external hard drive enclosure. There's an optional wifi adapter according to the website, but I haven't been able to find a place that sells them online.

Overall, this is an excellent product. I highly recommend it, although I've only had it for a few days. If it starts having problems, I'll update this review right away. I am surprised that no one else has reviewed it so far. I was a little worried that, for some reason, it wasn't compatible with U.S. broadcasting and equipment, but rest assured, American consumers, it does work.

Great little device in America!!

Review Date: February 11, 2010
Reviewer: N. Cheung, New York
Let me start by saying I cut cable because it was just getting to expensive. The bill just kept going up for channels that I really couldn't be bothered with. I do a lot of my watching on the web and the shows I do miss I usually acquire through...let's say other methods. But I did miss my DVR and the the only other method for OTA recording was purchasing the DTVPAL DVR or the Channel Master CM-7000PAL DVR which will be released later this year, 2010. But OTA recording wasn't the only requirement, I wanted to record HD just like my cable's DVR. Now the DTVPAL DVR sounded great, with HD recording, TV Guide, pause live TV, and dual tuner for dual recordings at the same time. But though the reviews were good the thing was expensive, the warranty limited (30 Days) and absolutely no returns with customer service basically non-existent. DirectTV just gave the DTV PAL DVR really poor backing and support. Plus the thing consumes 23 watts of power on and 21 off...not exactly a green machine. I might have considered it if the warranty was a limited one year policy, but the 30 day warranty, along with the negative reviews that I found really turned me off. Granted the there were more positive reviews, but their were quite a number of negative reviews as well, with some people claiming their machines died after only several months of use.

As for the Channel Master nothing to report since it has not been released yet.

Now for the TVIX is a great OTA recorder. It does not have a dual tuner, only a single ATSC tuner but I hardly ever record two shows at the same time. But it records in HD and it looks great on a 1080p 46" Samsung TV. I have been recording all my favorite shows in Crisp 1080i and since the R2210 can be used as an external drive, I just attach it to my Mac and copy the files over. Now I have a collection of my all my favorite shows in HI-Def. Awesome!! And just like Cable DVR just hit delete when your done with your shows and it also pauses live TV!

There is a guide that goes up to a week with show listings. It's great but not as extensive as what is offered on cable or the DTVPAL DVR. But R2210's guide does go to a week and provides name and info of shows just like cable. I just hit the record button and it programs itself to record. It's awesome! You can adjust recording quality so you can make more room for your recordings on your installed drive if your drive is small in capacity. But you can install up to a 1TB drive if you want. Unlike a DVR the R2210 is designed to have any size drive installed. Just slip the cover off and install your drive. It's that simple. I have a 320 GB drive in mine now.

The other thing that the R2210 does that no other DVR does, is play back any media file. The R2210 is a media player that plays anything back...ISO, MKV, DVIX, MP3 etc. It's awesome!

You can also connect a wireless network and stream stuff from your computer but you need to buy a USB wireless adapter...in this case the TViX WLAN-6200C.

The other thing I like is that you can turn it off and the drive isn't always spinning which is great because it will preserve the life of the drive. The R2210 consumes 12W while running and 0.5W in standby which makes it greener than most DVR's. Also you can turn it totally off too when not in use. The PVR itself attaches to a little fan that blows air directly onto the unit. It's nice but the unit itself rarely gets warm or hot whenever I use it. Still it's a nice little touch

TVIX is a Korean company and it is not well known here in the U.S. They have other machines too with dual tuners that can do everything your DVR can just do it with OTA signals. Though, they are more expensive. But they could be worth the money to you.

If you want to cut the cable bill and go OTA this is the thing. I used to spend 80.00 a month on my cable bill without the premium channels. Maybe if the cable companies do a la carte channels selection I'll go back. But with OTA HD and my TVIX R2210 I am perfectly happy to kiss my cable bills goodbye!

Check around the AVS forums. There is info on TVIX media players for those who are interested.

Now I have only had the R2210 for a month and a half but so far I love it!

With the DTVPAL and Channel Master releasing their OTA recorder, I am hoping the OTA recorder market will explode in the near future just like the VCR did years ago!

Good:
1) Inserted NTFS formated 500GB laptop drive - everything is working ok.
2) Recorded many programs during Olympic week - both standard definition and HD are recorded properly.
3) Pictures are displayed correctly and look really good on HD TV.
4) Music is played correctly but I have only mp3, so no comments on other formats.
5) Divx and my other video files are playing ok.
6) Both standard TV tuner and HD TV tuner are working and see all my TV channels.
7) Standard definition is recorded as *.mpg files. They play in my PC without problems.
8) HD content is recorded with different files extention. I did not opened them in my PC yet, but they play in the unit.

Small issues:
1) When scheduling a recording, set the start 2 minutes before the show because at the start of the recording there are some disturbances in the picture. But after a minute or so everything is ok and recording is done without problems. I left it on for a week and all the scheduled recordings for each day were done ok.
2) I am still unable to record the show simply by pressing Record button on the remote. All it allows me to do is record 1 hour maximum and after that it stops and says there is no disk space. But I can schedule a recording for up to 999 minutes and then everything is ok. With 500GB disk, I have about 2 weeks of recording already.
3) The interface is kind of slow, so you need to be patient with it. Browsing menu options - slow. Changing from standard definition channel to HD channel takes at least 10 seconds or more, so it is also slow.

Overall: recommended for small size, simplicity of use and ability to add new drives. Just perfect for travel or small spaces!

Product Description

Amazon.com Product Description The Monsoon HAVA Titanium HD WIFI lets you extend your home theater experience, both within your home and beyond! With WiFi built in, the HAVA accepts an HD video source and wirelessly streams it throughout your home in DVD-quality video. You can also watch and control programming on any PC or mobile phone with a broadband Internet connection.

The Monsoon HAVA Titanium HD WiFi:
  • Wirelessly streams your HD television programming through your home network.
  • Automatically adjusts the encoding for smooth video delivery depending on your network bandwidth.
  • Lets you watch local programming on your cell phone or from anywhere else you have broadband Internet.
  • Has additional USB port that can support an external hard drive for PVR recording.

You'll have control of your A/V components from your computer, complete with customizable virtual remote. View larger.

Wireless networking is built-in, so you can stream your video throughout your home without any cables. View larger.
Wirelessly Stream Live Programming Around Your House
By connecting your HD video source to the HAVA Titanium HD WIFI, you can wirelessly stream live television to multiple PCs around your house using your home network. The video is streamed wireless via an 802.11g network, and the Titanium HD WIFI automatically adjusts the encoding based on dynamic calculation of the bandwidth to ensure smooth video to all clients on the network. In addition to the wireless, there are also wired Ethernet connections available.

Programming comes in at DVD-quality wherever you are in your home, and multiple users around your house can watch/record the same program at the same time thanks to VBooster Multicast technology.

View Television Remotely From Virtually Anywhere
The HAVA Titanium HD WIFI allows you to watch your local television programming, or programming from another connected A/V device, from anywhere in the world with a broadband Internet connection. As you are watching, other members of the household can also watch the same programming on the home network. You can even remotely control the settings for virtually any A/V device, including PVRs, satellite TV, and digital cable boxes; a customizable virtual remote will show up on screen allowing for complete control of the device. It's like having a remote control that works everywhere!

Works as a PVR!
The HAVA Titanium HD can also function as a PVR. You can record, pause, fast forward, and rewind live TV right on your computer. Recorded shows are stored on your PC's hard drive, or on an external USB drive (sold separately). After you've recorded shows, you can burn them onto DVD for archiving or viewing during those instances when you don't have an Internet connection. The HAVA works out of the box with Microsoft MCE, or you can install the included PVR software for non-MCE PCs.

Using the HAVA mobile player software, you can watch television on your cell phone.
Compatible with Windows XP, Vista and Media Center PCs and Notebooks
When you connect HAVA Titanium HD WIFI to your network, you are in essence creating a virtual TV tuner for Media Center PCs. This eliminates the need for a separate TV tuner card, and the need for any hard-wired cable connection.

Two USB Ports for Upgradeability
The Titanium HD WIFI has two built-in USB ports, allowing for upgrade possibilities. The wireless functionality is provided by a USB 802.11g dongle, and this can be optionally upgraded with a USB 802.11n dongle to stream higher quality video. You can also connect an external USB hard drive for use with recording shows.

High-Quality Viewing
By employing the standard MPEG-2 format, the HAVA Titanium HD WIFI achieves the best possible video quality over a home wireless network. (Of course, you can also view using wired connections if you have any computers that lack wireless capability.) Television programming that is streamed through your home network boasts DVD-quality clarity. The video is also simultaneously encoded with the MPEG-4 standard, which has a higher compression and allows for remote viewing over a broadband Internet connection by a single client.

Thanks to the VBooster technology, all the users on the home network can experience high-quality video. While watching video, users can simultaneously use the Internet for regular uses such as web browsing, email, chatting, printing, transferring files, etc. The encoding is automatically adjusted based on the available bandwidth to ensure steady and smooth video all the time.

The HAVA Titanium HD requires a home network with either a 10/100 base-T router with an available Ethernet port or a wireless connection, a broadband Internet connection (300Kbps upstream recommended) for remote viewing, and a PC with Windows XP/Vista and a minimum of an Intel Pentium 1.2 GHz CPU, 512MB of RAM for XP and 1GB of RAM for Vista, 75 MB of disk space for the HAVA software, an Ethernet connection or 802.11g wireless capability, DirectX 9-class video card, and an audio output.

The HAVA Titanium HD WIFI is backed by a 1-year warranty.

What's in the Box
HAVA Titanium HD WIFI unit, two composite cables, Ethernet cable, power adapter, IR blaster cable, two component cables, 802.11g wireless dongle, quick start guide, software CD.

Stream television to computers in your home, or to your cell phone wherever you are.

Customer Reviews

Easy to install, a pleasure to use - and great customer support.

Review Date: January 1, 2009
Reviewer: Jerry Saperstein, Evanston, IL USA
The unit is manufactured by Monsoon Multimedia. It is a lesser known brand than its major competitor, Sling Media, makers of Slingbox. Generally speaking, the Hava line offers more features at a lower price point. Hava has a very impressive comparison chart on its website. It is definitely worth reviewing as you make your decision. In fact, I would strongly suggest that you review the detailed specifications for each of the competing units on their respective websites. It's an education in what may be a new technology for many and well worth the time it takes.

Installation took a few hassle-free minutes, including a firmware update.

What is the result of so little effort? You can view your television channels on any computer connected to your local network - and from any computer connected to the internet.

With the advent of very lightweight, inexpensive but reasonably powerful netbooks, Hava can open a new dimension in portable entertainment. With WiFi, you can watch your television from anywhere accessible by your network. In my environment, on a 802.11g wireless connection, the picture is gorgeous and lags just a few seconds behind the cable-fed box. There's an onscreen remote to use with TiVo, in my case, any many others for those controlling their cable box or other device.

The number of users on a local network is limited only by bandwidth.

You can also log in via the internet, which is a hoot and also very convenient. Staying at a motel that doesn't carry your favorite channel? Watch it using your Hava and for a potent combination, your DVR, such as a TiVo.

Hava also provides remote clients for a number of cell phones and PDAs. For some reason, I had poor results with my two Windows Mobile 6.x VGA devices in landscape, but reception was nothing less than astounding in portrait mode. On one I was using WiFi, on the other, Sprint's EV-DO Rev. A network.

This is a product that delivers what it promises. A hassle free installation and problem-free performance. I am very, very pleased with it.

A word about Hava's customer support: it is exemplary. I had a problem understanding something: not a difficulty with the product - just something about its use that I could't figure out. I called Hava tech support and was amazed at how much time and energy the Hava tech spent with me. A rarity in this age.

Overall, I find the Hava to be an excellent product and would recommend it over the Slingbox, based on specifications and my personal experience.

Wonderful network tuner with some limitations.

OK, let's get the cons out of the way first: This box does not have a slot for CableCards, which means that you are not going to use it to record anything except either OTA digital TV (from an antenna) or the major networks on clear QAM from your cable. That's just the way it is, that's what this box was designed to do, and that cannot be changed. It will not pick up analog or encrypted-digital cable channels. It does not interact with your television at all, unless you are using your TV as a computer monitor. This is NOT the way to convert your old TV to receive digital TV.

So what good is it? You can use it to pick up digital TV from an antenna or unencrypted QAM (usually network) cable signals, and stream to your computer for watching or recording.

I have two of these on my local network. I use them to stream Fox, NBC, ABC, and CBS to my MythTV box, where I record everything broadcast by the Big 4 in primetime onto 2 750GB disks, which hold about 2 weeks of the programming I record. I have demoted my TiVos to cable-channel and backup network use.

If your computer is not dual-core, it's not powerful enough to watch HDTV with (though it will do OK recording, if you have something else to watch with/on).

This unit also has a builtin infrared port that will transmit the codes from your remote control to your computer after you configure it.

It does come with some software, but I don't know what it does, I already had my older HDHomerun hooked up, and just added this one in MythTVSetup. As another reviewer mentioned, there is not a toll-free number to call for support, they use the internet and forums at silicondust. It's worth some time poking around those forums to see what people are doing, and what problems people are having, to see if this item is really what you are looking for.

It does exactly what I want, and I'm considering adding a third one for PBS and CW recording, and to experiment with building a Gray-Hoverman HDTV antenna.

LAST BUT NOT LEAST It is very important to use only RG6 coax cables and 2MHz-rated splitters for most cable HDTV. 1 foot of RG58 between my splitter and my HDHomerun completely destroyed the signal to that input. Don't convince yourself yours is broken until you know your cables are good.
3 Years of Reliable Use

What I like about this product is the flexibility a networked device delivers. All the computers in my house can access it as needed: the Linux box running MythTV, the Vista PC running Media Center, the Mac running EyeTV. Even my iPhone can access the HDHomerun to check on antenna signal quality (using an iPhone application I wrote: Signal GH). A tuner in a PCI slot or on a USB dongle would not be nearly as useful and would tend to be harder to setup as special device drivers would be required. And if every computer had its own tuner, my antenna signal strength would be split down to nothing.

I was an early adopter of this gadget, purchasing one in November 2006. It has been reliable and has good sensitivity for over the air broadcasts hooked up to my rooftop antenna. The manufacturer has released a steady stream of firmware updates resulting in a gadget you can rely on not to crash. As a software engineer I'm impressed with the quality of the publicly available code for controlling the device.

I've found it to be extremely easy to use with MythTV, making it one of the few easy things about MythTV.

My Kill-A-Watt tells me my HDHomerun draws 6W, which isn't horrible, and newer revisions are known for slightly better power usage but something to keep in mind for people worried about yet another constant electricity sink.
Fantastic device - the future of television?

This product is fantastic. After receiving the device I literally plugged it in to the cable TV, network and power, installed the EyeTV 3.0 software on my iMac and BAM!! It was working. Beautiful high definition television TV right on my Mac desktop. I cannot fault the device. Yes it is ugly but you can put in a cupboard on on a shelf and never have to look at it again. I really don't understand why Amazon doesn't stock the device. The only downsides that I have encountered are with the Electronic Program Guide for the EyeTV software which actually uses TitanTV. It took 24 hours for it to download the first program guide, and then I had to manually tweak all the stations.
Awesome product....

I was debating for a while if I should purchase a mac mini with the hd homerun or an apple tv or tivo. A tivo will cost me $299 plus a monthly cost. The apple tv will cost $299. A mac mini is $599 plus $170 for the hd homerun for a total of $769.

It cost more than tivo or the apple tv but you can do a lot more with a mac mini and hd homerun combined. You can use it as a standalone computer and dvd player.

The hd homerun can record two shows at once and will work just like the tivo.

If you pair the hd homerun with elgato eyetv software this setup becomes superior and easy to use.

The mac mini can do the same as the apple tv. You get less memory on the mini but cheap external hard drives take care of the problem. The mini comes with a remote and front row as well.

Here is my setup:
-Mac Mini 1.83ghz c2d
-Silicon Dust HD HomeRun
-Elgato EyeTV Software
-Google these free plugins for EyeTV: pyetv (integrates eyetv into front row), etvcomskip (skips commercials automatically when watching a recorded show.
-Logitech Dinovo Edge Mac Edition: This is essential to the setup. Its a keyboard with a built it trackpad. No more shuffling between a keyboard and mouse. Its an all in one making life a lot easier.

The hd homerun works perfect. With elgato eyetv software setup was really easy.
This thing rocks!

This thing rocks. Plug in your cable or antenna, attach it to your network, and this thing works. There is Windows software included. Personally, I am using MythTV for Linux, and the installation took me 2 minutes total.

Comcast in Pennsylvania encrypts most channels, and your cable provider may do this too. There is no reason they should do this, other than to ensure that non Comcast boxes will not work. Instead, an old UHF television antenna is ideal for watching HDTV television from your local broadcast television networks.

This device is not designed to pick-up analog television stations. Some cable providers will rebroadcast analog stations digitally, which will allow you to tune them in -- if they are not encrypted.

None of these problems are related to the functionality of this device, which has been FLAWLESS, and the thing never needs to be reset. The company also releases updated drivers and firmware often, and they also support their products pretty well, even replacing defective power adaptors for free (and in 5 days!).

If you're on the fence with this unit, just get it -- two tuners, multiplatform operation, and the unit not does not crash.
